Trading in your current vehicle is one of the most practical ways to reduce what you owe when shopping for the best used cars on the lot. When the appraisal is done transparently and you arrive knowing what your car is worth, buying quality pre-owned cars becomes a straightforward process from start to finish.
Before visiting any dealership, look up your vehicle’s trade-in value on Kelley Blue Book using the trade-in tool. Enter the year, make, model, mileage, and an honest condition rating. The result gives you a realistic baseline before you sit down with any appraiser.
Trade-in value is the amount a dealership offers for your current vehicle, applied toward the purchase of a different one. Trade-in value is typically lower than private sale value because the dealership takes on the cost of inspection, reconditioning, and resale. Knowing this number in advance means you can evaluate any offer with real context.
The appraisal goes faster when you arrive prepared. Bring your vehicle title, or your loan account information if you still owe a balance on the car. A valid government-issued photo ID and your current vehicle registration are both required.
Make sure you also have all spare keys and key fobs for the vehicle. If you have service records, bring them. Documented maintenance history protects your trade-in value and gives our appraiser a clearer picture of the vehicle.
When you bring your vehicle to us, we appraise it using Kelley Blue Book data and walk through the calculation with you directly. The process does not happen behind closed doors. You see the data we are working from and the number we arrive at.
“The gentleman even sat down and did a KBB value on my trade-in right in front of me and gave me what they recommended for it, and didn’t try to haggle it lower.”
That is how every appraisal we conduct works.
We accept trade-ins on all makes, models, and conditions. You also do not need to be purchasing a replacement vehicle to get an appraisal from us. If you want to sell your car for cash without buying anything, we can handle that. Learn more on our sell or trade in your vehicle page.
Once the appraisal is complete, the trade-in value is applied directly toward the vehicle you are buying. This reduces the amount you need to finance or pay out of pocket.
If your trade-in comes in at $7,000 and the pre-owned vehicle you want is priced at $16,000, you are financing or paying the remaining $9,000. This is also one of the most effective ways to meet a down payment requirement if you are financing with challenged credit. Our in-house financing options for all credit types can be combined with your trade-in value to make the total more manageable.
If your outstanding loan balance exceeds the trade-in value, that difference is called negative equity. This does not automatically prevent a trade-in, but it does affect how the transaction is structured.
The most common outcome is that the negative equity rolls into the new loan. Our finance team will show you exactly how that changes your monthly payment and total loan cost before you agree to anything. We do not hand you a number without explaining where it comes from.
